Bharti Consolidates Holding in London-Listed Airtel Africa
The latest transaction adds to Bharti’s long-term push to deepen its African telecom presence
Bharti Airtel is increasing its ownership in Airtel Africa through an internal share transaction that reflects the growing importance of its African business to the wider group.
The Indian telecom operator approved the allotment of 146.8 million shares to Indian Continent Investment Limited, a Bharti-linked investment entity, under a swap arrangement tied to Airtel Africa stock. The African unit is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Under the deal terms, Bharti Airtel will issue the shares at INR1,923 apiece, or roughly $20 each. The company stated that the valuation is above the minimum pricing threshold required under market regulations.
Once completed, the transaction will strengthen Bharti Airtel’s direct position in Airtel Africa, where it already holds a 62.73% stake.
The move comes during a period of continued expansion for Airtel Africa across several markets where mobile data usage and digital payments are still climbing. The company recently reported strong operational growth, helped by rising customer activity in both telecom and financial services products.
Its mobile money business remains a major focus area. Earlier this year, Airtel Africa deferred plans to float that unit on the public market, pointing to unstable conditions for new listings.
By consolidating additional ownership, Bharti Airtel is reinforcing Africa’s role inside the group’s long-term earnings strategy. The region continues to offer subscriber growth opportunities that are becoming harder to find in more mature telecom markets.
