NTT DATA Becomes First Network Operator in Africa to Hit 400Gbpd Peering at JINX

Global IT services provider NTT DATA has announced the activation of Africa’s first 400Gbps peering connection at the Johannesburg Internet Exchange (JINX).

The development comes as Africa continues to rank among the fastest-growing digital markets worldwide, fuelled by rising internet penetration, increased submarine cable capacity, and the rapid adoption of digital services. Industry players say sustained investment in high-performance exchange infrastructure will be critical in supporting economic growth, innovation, and broader digital inclusion.

The new 400Gbps peering capability positions JINX, Africa’s oldest internet exchange point, established in 1996, as a competitive hub on par with leading global exchange environments. Operated by the Internet Exchange Point of South Africa, a division of the Internet Service Providers’ Association, JINX plays a central role in facilitating efficient data exchange across multiple data centres in Johannesburg.

NTT DATA, which operates the NTT DATA Broadband Network (AS20011), acts as a key aggregator connecting access networks, content providers, and enterprise platforms across the region.

“Africa’s Internet traffic is growing rapidly, and the demand for scalable, resilient and low-latency connectivity continues to increase,” said JC Burger, Director of Infrastructure Engineering and Operations at NTT DATA South Africa. “Establishing 400Gbps peering at JINX is a strategic investment that strengthens our ability to deliver high-performance connectivity while supporting the long-term growth of Africa’s digital economy.”

For businesses, the infrastructure upgrade is expected to deliver improved network performance during peak usage periods, greater capacity to handle rising traffic volumes, and enhanced reliability for digital services.

The move underscores South Africa’s readiness for hyperscale peering and reflects growing confidence in the region’s digital ecosystem. It also highlights NTT DATA’s ongoing commitment to building scalable, carrier-grade infrastructure aimed at supporting a more resilient and high-performance internet landscape across Africa.
