Ben Roberts Joins UNICEF as Strategic Advisor on Subsea Cable Connectivity

Ben Roberts, a prominent figure in Africa’s ICT and telecommunications sector, has been appointed as a Strategic Advisor on Subsea Cable Economics for Connectivity at UNICEF.

In a statement shared on his official LinkedIn page, Roberts said, “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Strategic Advisor on Subsea Cable Economics for Connectivity at UNICEF!”

Roberts brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served in executive and advisory positions across the telecom industry, most notably as the former Group CTIO of Liquid Intelligent Technologies.

Ben had been with Liquid for 22 years, where he was a pivotal figure in driving the company’s technological advancements and innovations across the African continent.

His leadership was instrumental in establishing Liquid as a leading force in the telecommunications and technology sectors in Africa, helping to create a robust network infrastructure that has had a transformative impact on the region.

“I’m proud to have built and led great teams, and with the great work from those teams, built great products, and perhaps the greatest network in Africa,” he said while announcing his departure from Liquid in August last year.

At UNICEF, he will be focusing on the economics and strategic development of subsea cable systems to help accelerate global internet connectivity, particularly in underserved regions. The appointment aligns with UNICEF’s broader digital inclusion and Giga initiatives, which aim to connect every school and community to the internet.
