Tecno Spark 5 Pro Review

... A good upgrade

Tecno Spark 5 Pro Review: Tecno Mobile officially unveiled the Tecno Spark 5 Pro in Kenya this month. This launch comes after the company unveiled the Tecno Spark 5 (review) in May this year in the country.

The Spark 5 Pro comes with lots of new and upgraded features including some 128GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM.

Tecno’s Spark series has always been our favourite and all the phones we have interacted with within these series are pretty decent in their price range.

As the company noted in the press release they sent during the launch of the Spark 5 Pro on October 15, consumers always want to get their hands on the latest and most innovative smartphones. Nevertheless, as flagships have improved with time, rising costs have put these modern smartphones out of most people’s reach. From large storage space and superior camera quality to long-lasting battery life and powerful performance, consumers now have increased expectations of their smartphones – without being exorbitantly priced. Tecno tries to offer this with the Spark series.

We already did the unboxing video for you which you can watch below:

Tecno Spark 5 Pro looks pretty good for sure and is a worthy upgrade to the standard Spark 5 model that Tecno is selling at around Ksh.14,000. This is the same price Tecno is selling the Spark 5 Pro.

The gradient and iridescent back houses a rectangular block with four cameras in the upper left corner. It is also here at the back that we have the fingerprint sensor.  The frame and back panel are made of glossy plastic just as we saw on the standard model.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro is a large smartphone with a 6.6″ screen with a resolution of 720×1600 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20:9. If you’re into large displays then you will definitely love this phone. If you find it uncomfortable to use you can always activate the one-handed control mode to reduce the interface to a comfortable size to use the smartphone on the go.

Colour reproduction, contrast are all okay, same for the viewing angles.

Performance-wise, the Tecno Spark 5 Pro is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio A25 processor and comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The 4GB of RAM is quite enough for a smartphone of this level. You can switch between several applications and they will not be unloaded from the memory. The 128GB storage should also be enough to store all your files But remember that storage can be expanded by installing a microSD card up to 256 GB using a dedicated slot.

The system on this hardware handles everything pretty well, there were no serious delays or lags throughout our interaction with this device.

Spark 5 Pro runs on Android 10 OS with HiOS version 6.1. This comes with many features – two navigation methods to choose from, a theme store, a side smart panel with quick access to selected apps or actions among others.

Unfortunately, we still get those annoying notifications that we have been highlighting on all Tecno phone reviews we have done before. Our hope is that Tecno will one day do something about this.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro has a 5000mAh battery capacity that guarantees you 2-day battery life which is quite impressive. There’s no fast charging support and charging the phone to full capacity takes like 3 hours. But again, the battery performance is really what we expected, nothing much to say here.

As far as the cameras are concerned, Spark 5 Pro packs an AI Quad Camera on the back featuring a 16-megapixel primary camera with an f/f/1.8 aperture; a second 2-megapixel camera; a third 2-megapixel camera and a fourth aI camera. It sports an 8-megapixel camera on the front for selfies, with an f/f/2.0 aperture.

The main camera takes normal pictures in excellent lighting conditions. Don’t expect to get any good shots in low-lights, the photos produced have so much noise and lack detail.  Video can be recorded in Full HD at 30 frames per second and you can shoot up to 1080p. Check sample shots below under different modes.

The selfie camera on the other hand shoots just fine. The photo quality is acceptable for a phone of this level.

Camera modes include video, photo, beauty, blur, AR shooting and panorama.

Bottom line, the Spark 5 Pro is a good phone, a budget phone we would recommend for anyone looking for an upgrade. It comes with lots of new and upgraded features including some 128GB of internal storage, 4GB of RAM and amazing battery life.

The camera experience might not be the best but it’s just what you would expect in a budget phone. The phone is available in Kenya for Ksh.14,000.
