Tecno Camon 15 Premier Vs Vivo Y19: Stiff Competition

Tecno Camon 15 Premier and vivo Y19 (Review) both come from Chinese smartphone makers and target the same lower mid-range market. With that said, it’s not surprising that both of these phones go for Ksh 27,000 in Kenya. But which phone is better?

In this article, we’ll compare the two based on their underlining specs to help you chose your poison.

Design

Tecno Camon 15 Premier and vivo Y19 both have the modern smartphone design. Tecno Camon 15 Premier goes for a pop-up selfie camera while the Vivo Y19 has the selfie camera inside a tear-drop notch. As a result, both devices have a nice body to screen ratio as far as 2020 phones are concerned.

The build is pretty identical with the same plastic material on the back and the frame while the front is made of glass. Weight will be of much importance as vivo Y19 weighs 193g while the Camon 15 is a bit heavier with 203g.

At the back, you’ll find a rectangular camera bump on both phones plus a fingerprint sensor placed at the top middle position. Tecno Camon 15 Premier is available in either Ice Jadeite or Opal White, while Vivo Y19 in Mystic Silver, Sleek Silver, and Piano Black paint jobs.

Display

Tecno Camon 15 Premier: 6.6-inch IPS LCD, FHD+(1080 x 2340 pixels), 19.5:9 ratio (~390 ppi density)

Vivo Y19: 6.53-inch IPS LCD, FHD+ 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~395 ppi density)

Tecno Camon 15 Premier offers a slightly larger display and hence a low number of pixels per inch. Because of the slightly smaller display, Vivo Y19 has more pixels per inch thus having more pixels per inch compared to the Tecno Camon 15 Premier. However, there is no high refresh rates or other special functionalities offered by any of the two.

Camera

Tecno Camon 15 Premier Camera

Tecno Camon 15 Premier: 64 MP (wide) + 5 MP (ultrawide) + 2 MP (depth) + QVGA/AI lens

Camera Features: 8x zoom, EIS, macro photography, HDR, Bokeh, panorama

Video: 1080p@30fps

Vivo Y19 Camera

Vivo Y19: 16 MP, f/1.8, (wide) + 8 MP, f/2.2 (ultrawide) + 2 MP, f/2.4 (macro camera)

Camera Features: HDR, Bokeh, panorama, macro photography, Zoom

Video: 1080p@30fps

Multiple camera lenses on smartphones have become a norm, and these two have at least three stacked at the back. However, Tecno Camon 15 Premier has an additional AI lens promising to take better night photos.

For selfies,  Vivo Y19 has a 16 MP (wide) lens while its competitor has a single 32MP front-facing camera. For photography, we have already reviewed Vivo Y19’s camera previously which you can find here. We are yet to review the Tecno Camon 15 Premier, but stay tuned for an update on the same whenever possible.

Hardware and performance

Tecno Camon 15 Premier: Mediatek MT6765 Helio P35 (12nm); Octa-core CPU (4×2.35 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) + PowerVR GE8320 GPU

Vivo Y19: Mediatek MT6768 Helio P65 (12nm); Octa-core CPU (2×2.0 GHz Cortex-A75 & 6×1.7 GHz Cortex-A55) + Mali-G52 MC2 GPU

Under the hood of both phones is a chipset from Taiwanese silicon company, MediaTek. MediaTek Helio P65 performs better than Helio P35 which powers the Tecno Camon 15 Premier. Helio P60 series typically offers better performance than the P30 series. But in raw performance, Helio P35’s CPU clocks at higher 2.35GHz.

The CPU gamble aside, Tecno Camon 15 Premier comes with 128GB ROM + 6GB RAM while Vivo’s Y19 with just 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You are, however, not limited to 128GB on both phones since you can expand via microSD if you want to.

Battery

Tecno Camon 15 Premier is powered by a 4000mAh battery while Vivo Y19 depends on a 5000mAh battery. The special feature offered by Vivo Y19 is 18W Fast charging technology support which proves beneficial in juicing up the massive battery. Besides that, the phone also supports reverse charging but it maxes out at a tiny 5W.

Software

You get Android 10.0 Q on Tecno Camon 15 Premier while Vivo Y19 still runs on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. Both phones have their own proprietary UIs on top of Android. Vivo has Funtouch 9.2 while Tecno has HiOS v6.0.

Price

Both phones go for Ksh 27,000.

Verdict

The two phones have pretty similar features but have slight differences. Vivo Y19 gains an edge over Tecno Camon 15 Premier for its lightweight nature, bigger 5,000mAh battery, fast charging & reverse charging support.

In terms of performance, Tecno Camon 15 Premier offers better raw CPU performance and is aided by 6GB of memory unlike 4GB in its competitor.

Tecno Camon 15 Premier also offers the latest Android 10 OS out of the box and has the mighty 64MP sensor which should cram more details inside a picture than the 16MP Vivo Y19 has.

It’s sad that Vivo Y19 costs this much and ships with Android 9.0 Pie, needless to speak about the company’s proprietary Android skin which is confusing for first-timers. That is not to say Tecno’s HiOS is any better, but at least it’s familiar so no matter which Android skin you’re coming from you can get back on track pretty fast.

  1. I think the Vivo Y19 smartphone should be much better an option due to the power of MediaTek helio p65 processor.
