Apple’s iPhone 11 Crowned as the world’s most-popular smartphone in Q1 by Research Firm Omdia

Smartphone sales in Q1 were heavily impacted by the full and partial lockdowns around the world. Despite this, some phew phones managed to win more consumer’s hearts than others managing to sell millions of units in just three months.

According to a recent report from Omdia, Apple leads the market with last year’s iPhone 11 selling more units than any other phone. The company shipped a whopping 19.5m units. The impressive sales even surpass what the company achieved with 2018’s iPhone XR in Q1 2019 when it sold just 13.6m units.

Apple’s strategy of releasing “budget” iPhones along with other flagship iPhones at a time seems to be working after the success of the iPhone XR and now the iPhone 11.

In fact, the iPhone 11 was a bit cheaper than the predecessor – although by a tiny $50.

Other Apple devices unveiled last year – iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max – also showed up in the top 10 list and even 2018’s iPhone XR. iPhone XR was ranked fifth, iPhone 11 Pro Max sixth, and iPhone 11 Pro eighth.

Samsung Galaxy A51 scooped number two with 6.8m units shipped in Q1, according to Omdia. The second device from Samsung included in the list is the company’s recently unveiled Galaxy S20+ 5G flagship phone.

You might remember that CounterPoint Research’s report released earlier this month suggested that the Galaxy A51 was the best-selling phone in Q1in a list that was dominated by Android phones only.

Omdia’s director of Smartphone research Jusy Hong attributed Samsung’s diluted shipment volumes due to its move to increase the number of models in the Galaxy series. For Apple, their strength lies in offering few models per cycle, says Hong.

The third and fourth place was held by devices from the popular Chinese OEM, Xiaomi. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro were ranked third and fourth with 6.6m and 6.1m units shipped respectively.
