TECNO, Safaricom cut POVA Curve 2 5G price by Sh11,000

Phone maker TECNO has partnered with Safaricom to cut the price of one of its 5G smartphones by Sh11,000. The two firms are trying to close the gap between Kenya’s growing 5G network and the number of people with phones that can use it.

Under the deal, TECNO’s POVA Curve 2 5G will sell at Sh44,999, down from its usual retail price of Sh55,999, until October 31.

TECNO says that while network expansion determines where 5G is available, access to compatible handsets determines how many consumers can actually use it.

“Kenya has made significant progress in expanding its digital infrastructure, but meaningful adoption also depends on ensuring consumers can access devices capable of taking advantage of that infrastructure,” said Mildred Agoya, head of marketing at TECNO Kenya.

“Our partnership with Safaricom is about helping close that gap,” she said.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has identified affordable devices, alongside spectrum, infrastructure investment and supportive regulation, as key to widening the benefits of 5G.

The regulator is also updating its mobile quality of service framework to cover 4G and 5G networks.

The POVA Curve 2 5G runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 7100 processor and has an 8,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging, in a 7.42mm-thin body.

Customers who bought the phone before the offer started will receive a free TECNO POP 20 smartphone, subject to verification.

Those who bought it through Safaricom’s Lipa Mdogo Mdogo pay-in-instalments plan will also get a one-month repayment waiver.

Smartphone affordability remains a key barrier to digital adoption in Kenya, where entry-level 4G handsets still dominate sales.
