Visa puts Featurespace technology to work in upgraded A2A fraud protection

Visa has upgraded its A2A Protect fraud prevention solution with a unified fraud score that uses Featurespace technology to help banks identify account-to-account (A2A) payment fraud in real time.

The new scoring capability is Visa’s first in-market integration of Featurespace technology. It is designed to give financial institutions faster risk signals, helping them identify potentially fraudulent transactions while reducing unnecessary alerts.

The update comes as A2A payments continue to expand globally. According to Visa, A2A transactions are projected to surpass 5.8 trillion by 2028, a 160% increase from 2024.

A2A Protect uses artificial intelligence and transfer learning to provide banks with risk insights based on activity across the payments ecosystem. Financial institutions can access those insights without waiting for months to build fraud models from their own transaction data or for other banks to join a consortium.

“Fraudsters move fast across payment types, and financial institutions need risk insights just as quickly, without slowing down legitimate payments,” said Walter Lironi, Senior Vice President, Head of Head of Value-Added Services, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEMEA), Visa. “A2A Protect combines Visa’s network expertise with Featurespace’s technology to deliver a powerful new layer of protection that helps financial institutions detect more fraud, earlier.”

Banks that opt into network-level intelligence sharing can also receive signals on emerging scam hotspots and coordinated fraud activity. The additional intelligence is intended to help institutions identify threats that may not be apparent from their own transaction data and detect scams before a payment is authorized.

Visa noted that A2A Protect can be integrated with existing financial institution systems through a single API. Fraud alerts also provide plain-language explanations of why a transaction was flagged, giving fraud teams additional context when assessing potential threats.

The expanded A2A Protect solution is designed to provide banks with earlier visibility into fraud patterns as the volume of account-to-account payments grows, while limiting disruption to legitimate transactions.
