Enterprise security teams are carrying a heavier workload as the cybersecurity skills gap grows
The cybersecurity skills shortage has become more than a hiring challenge. For many enterprise security teams, it now shapes how quickly incidents are investigated, how much context analysts can process and how effectively security operations can keep pace with a growing volume of alerts.
The workload has changed even where headcount has not. Kaspersky’s Enterprise Security Guide points to this sustained pressure, citing research showing that 41% of information security professionals say their organisations are somewhat or significantly understaffed.
That gap cannot always be solved through recruitment alone. Experienced security professionals remain difficult to find, while expanding digital environments continue to generate more telemetry and more investigations. As a result, analysts can spend valuable time correlating alerts, reviewing event data and switching between systems instead of focusing on the highest-priority risks.
The guide argues that organisations should look beyond adding headcount and strengthen the way security operations function. AI-assisted investigation, automated prioritisation, unified visibility and structured response workflows can help teams work through incidents more efficiently without treating automation as a replacement for human judgement. The objective is to reduce repetitive work so analysts can concentrate on investigations that require expertise.
For enterprise leaders, the workforce conversation is therefore becoming an operational one. Sustainable security operations depend on giving existing teams better tools, clearer context and faster ways to move from detection to response. When those elements work together, organisations can strengthen resilience while easing pressure on the people responsible for protecting the business.
