M-PESA Ethiopia Adds Prepaid Electricity Payments to Super App for EEU Smart Meter Users


M-PESA Ethiopia has expanded its digital its digital payments platform by introducing prepaid electricity payments through M-PESA Super App, enabling customers with Ethiopian Electric Utility Smart Meter devices to purchase electricity direct from their mobile phones.

The new services allows users to recharge prepaid electricity accounts without visiting physical payment centers, offering a fast and more convenient way to access electricity tokens. Customers need to update the M-PESA Super App to the latest version in order to access this feature.

To complete the purchase of tokens, users will select M-PESA, navigate to Pay Utility, choose Ethiopian Electric Utility (Prepaid) and enter their Contract Account Number, they can then buy electricity by entering a payment amount in Ethiopian Birr or select the preferred number of kilowatt hours. Once the transaction is confirmed, the platform instantly generates a 20-digit token that the customers can enter into their EEU Smart Meter to activate the purchased electricity.

This rollout strengthens M-PESA Ethiopia’s portfolio of digital financial services by integrating prepaid utility payments into its mobile platform. The addition is designed to improve access to electricity top ups while reducing reliance on in person service centers and allowing customers to complete transactions at any time and from any location.

The enhancement also reflects the company’s ongoing strategy to strengthen its digital payments ecosystem by offering customers secure and accessible mobile based services that streamline routine financial and utility payment needs.
