KETRACO Switches On Isinya–Konza Line as Konza Technopolis Prepares for Growth
The new transmission line and substation add capacity to Kenya's grid while providing the power infrastructure expected to support future growth at Konza Technopolis.
Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has switched the Isinya–Konza transmission line and the Konza substation, marking a significant step in strengthening electricity infrastructure for Konza Technopolis and the wider lower eastern region. The KETRACO Isinya–Konza transmission line adds new capacity to the national grid while providing the power backbone required to support future industrial, commercial and technology investment around Kenya’s flagship smart city project.
The commissioning may appear to be another routine energy infrastructure announcement, but its importance lies in transmission rather than generation. While Kenya has spent years expanding electricity production, particularly through geothermal development, the ability to move large volumes of power reliably across the country remains equally important.
Why the Isinya–Konza project matters
The newly energized infrastructure is designed to improve the movement of electricity between key parts of the national network. According to KETRACO, the project will increase power transfer capacity, improve system stability and provide greater operational flexibility for grid operators.
For electricity systems, reliability depends not only on how much power is generated but also on how effectively it can be transmitted to areas where demand is growing. Transmission corridors create the pathways that allow electricity to move across regions while reducing congestion and improving resilience during outages or maintenance works.
The project also creates additional redundancy within the network, giving system operators alternative routes for electricity flows when disruptions occur elsewhere on the grid.
Building the electricity backbone for Konza Technopolis
The largest beneficiary is expected to be Konza Technopolis, one of Kenya’s most ambitious long-term development projects.
For years, discussions around Konza have focused on attracting technology companies, research institutions, manufacturers, data centres and other investment-driven developments. Reliable electricity remains one of the most important requirements for all of those sectors.
Large investors evaluate more than simple access to power. They assess supply quality, network stability, available capacity and the ability to scale operations without future infrastructure constraints.
The energization of a dedicated high-capacity transmission connection signals that Kenya is continuing to build the foundational infrastructure needed to support future growth within the technopolis and its surrounding economic zones.
What the new transmission infrastructure includes
The project consists of a 98-kilometre double-circuit 400kV transmission line connecting Isinya and Konza.
It also includes a modern 400/132/66kV substation equipped with two 400/132kV transformers rated at 350MVA each and two 132/66kV transformers rated at 100MVA each.
Together, these assets provide the capacity needed to receive electricity from the high-voltage transmission network and distribute it across multiple voltage levels for industrial, commercial and regional consumption.
The infrastructure is intended to support both existing demand and future expansion as development activity increases around Konza and neighbouring areas.
How the project strengthens Kenya’s national grid
KETRACO Acting Managing Director Kipkemoi Kibias described the energization as an important milestone in strengthening the reliability of Kenya’s transmission network.
Beyond serving Konza, the project enhances interconnectivity within the broader grid. Stronger transmission links improve system resilience by allowing electricity to be redirected more effectively during faults, outages or periods of peak demand.
The investment also supports growing electricity consumption driven by urban expansion, industrial activity and new economic developments across the lower eastern region.
As more businesses and communities connect to the grid, transmission infrastructure increasingly becomes a critical factor in maintaining service quality and network stability.
The broader role of transmission in Kenya’s energy strategy
The Isinya–Konza project reflects a wider shift in Kenya’s energy sector. Much of the country’s recent attention has focused on increasing generation capacity through geothermal, wind and other renewable energy projects.
The next phase of development is increasingly centred on ensuring that generated power can reach emerging industrial zones and growth corridors efficiently.
Viewed through that lens, the Isinya–Konza transmission line is not simply an electricity project. It is part of a broader economic infrastructure strategy aimed at supporting industrialization, attracting investment and advancing the long-term objectives of Vision 2030.
Whether Konza ultimately achieves its ambitions as a technology and innovation hub will depend on many factors. Reliable electricity alone cannot guarantee success. What this project does provide is one of the essential foundations that large-scale economic development requires before private investment can follow.
