Tala Tightens Identity Checks as Kenya’s Digital Lending Rules Take Hold

Tala is asking borrowers to update their identity details as new KYC rules reshape how digital loans are issued in Kenya

Digital lender Tala has introduced stricter identity checks for its Kenyan users, requiring updated personal details before access to loans continues. The move aligns with compliance directives from the Central Bank of Kenya, which mandate tighter borrower verification across digital credit platforms.

Customers must now upload a valid national ID and complete a real-time selfie check through the Tala app. The company says accounts that do not meet the updated requirements risk limited access to credit services.

The changes stem from regulatory frameworks including the Central Bank of Kenya Act (Amendment) 2021 and the Digital Credit Providers Regulations 2022. Additional provisions are under consideration in the Draft Non-Deposit Taking Credit Providers Regulations 2025, which aim to deepen oversight of lenders operating outside traditional banking structures.

Tala’s Senior Compliance and Ethics Manager, Tabby Mugechi, said completion of personal data verification is now a prerequisite for borrowing. She stated that the process is designed to strengthen account security and reduce cases of identity misuse.

The lender’s update reflects a broader compliance push affecting Kenya’s fast-growing digital credit sector, where regulators are focusing on borrower assessment and fraud prevention. By enforcing identity validation at the point of access, lenders are being required to demonstrate clearer accountability in how credit is issued.
