Twiga Foods Temporarily Pauses Nairobi Operations

Twiga Foods, the Kenyan agri-tech and food distribution company, has announced a temporary operational pause in its Nairobi operations. The company, which is among the most funded e-commerce startups in Kenya said the move is part of its final phase of a broader business transformation strategy.
Founded in 2014, Twiga Foods has grown to become a key player in streamlining agricultural supply chains in Kenya. The company leverages technology to connect farmers directly with retailers, cutting out intermediaries and reducing post-harvest losses.
Its digital platform has played a pivotal role in improving market access for farmers while ensuring retailers get consistent access to affordable fresh produce and consumer goods.
Twiga says it will use this brief pause to develop an alternative distribution centre in a more strategic location. The company aims to resume full operations by August.
The company, which has been undergoing internal restructuring in the last couple of months that included layoffs, says it is undergoing another reorganisation that will affect certain roles, particularly within the supply chain department.
”This workforce adjustment process is being conducted transparently, respectfully, and in strict compliance with Kenyan labour laws and internal company policies,” the firm said. ”Twiga Foods is committed to supporting all affected employees during this period.”
Twiga says this internal reorganisation is being done to better align its operational model with evolving market requirements. The focus, it says, will be on strengthening core capabilities, particularly in technology, business intelligence, and digital solutions, to better meet the needs of customers and partners.
”These strategic decisions, taken with careful consideration, are necessary to build a stronger, more resilient organisation that is well-equipped to scale and meet the demands of Kenya’s dynamic market. The company is actively engaging with its customers, suppliers, and business partners to ensure a smooth transition and minimise any potential disruptions.”
”The measures announced represent the final steps in Twiga’s journey to transform its business model, ensuring financial sustainability, competitiveness, and the ability to lastingly serve Kenya’s retail ecosystem,” it says.
