Nigeria launches Africa’s first humanoid robot named Omeife

UNICCON Group, a Nigerian company founded in 2020, has launched a humanoid robot, the first of its kind in Africa. The company’s work cuts across developing STEM research, training, and various use solutions. The humanoid robot named Omeife is the company’s first major AI product since its launch.

UNICCON says the multipurpose assistance robot is about a six-foot-tall female that will provide multilingual services for businesses to connect with native African audiences. The robot also holds the capability to understand various cultures and behavioural patterns.

Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who was the Chief Guest at the launch event emphasized the need for African innovators to lead such initiatives.

“Most of the robots we have are not African so we are excited to see Omeife today with African data built and looking African because this will help us to boost our technology locally and to promote our culture and values because if we say we are going to use what is built somewhere, it will be difficult for us to benefit from the artificial intelligence,” Osinbajo said.

The company says that Omeife adds a lot of value to security depending on the usage, whether it is surveillance, intelligence gathering, Robo-army, profiling, and lie detection.

The humanoid robot can also understand and speak English, French, Arabic, Kiswahili, Pidgin, Wazobia, Afrikaans, and Igbo with a native accent, pitch, vocabulary, and precise pronunciations of words and sentences.

Chuks Ekwueme, founder and CEO of  Unicorn Group describes the humanoid as a multipurpose and assistance robot that provides language as a service to businesses that require native African audiences to be integrated.
