Vivo Made More Sales In Q1 Than South Korean Tech Giant, Samsung In India

For the first time, vivo has overtaken Samsung’s smartphone sales in India in a single quarter. The list of top five popular companies in the Indian market remained the same, but vivo finally made it to the second position, while Samsung dropped to number 3.

Samsung smartphone sales slipped by 13.7 percent – a total of 6.3 million units – down from the 7.3 million units in Q1 last year. That saw Samsung’s market share fall down to 18.9 per cent from 24.4 per cent annually.

Xiaomi continued its dominance in the last quarter, currently holding a 30.6 per cent share, down from 31.4 percent in Q1 2019. The company managed to ship 10.3 million devices, followed by vivo with a total of 6.7 million devices and 19.9 percentage market share. Vivo’s smartphone sales were up by nearly 50 percent compared to a similar period last year.

A honorable mention in the top five is Oppo’s sub-brand Realme which recorded a 200 percent annual growth. But surprisingly, the company still maintained its fourth position. Oppo, on the other hand, maintained its fifth position.

Despite the virus outbreak, the India smartphone market, one of the largest in the world, saw an increase of sales year over year. Canalys says Indian smartphone shipments grew 12 per cent year over year. Which, in part, is because the country went into lockdown in the final week of March.
