Huawei Unveils Kirin 990, a 5G Integrated Processor to Power Mate 30 Series


Recently Samsung announced the world’s first 5G integrated SoC, Exynos 980. Following that suit, Huawei at IFA 2019 also announced their first 5G integrated SoC, Kirin 990.

Just like Samsung Exynos 980 SoC, Kirin 990 also comes with a 4G LTE variant. Kirin 990 has been built with the 7nm process, and Huawei says it will deliver maximum upload speed of 1.25Gbps and maximum download speed of 2.3Gbps.

The chip is made up of eight ARM Cortex CPU cores with two large cores (A-76) clocking at higher frequencies, two medium cores and four power-efficient small cores (A-55). Kirin 990 uses MediaTek’s 16-core Mali-G76 GPU (up from a 10-core Mali-G76 in Kirin 980) touted at delivering high graphical processing while saving on power.

Just like Samsung’s 5G integrated SoC, Huawei’s Kirin 990 only supports the sub-6GHz 5G band in which the company says it is pretty everywhere else except in the US where they are facing restrictions.

Kirin 990 5G SoC also packs dual-core NPU built on the Da Vinci architecture aimed at delivering high performance under heavy workload like intensive gaming while at the same minimizing on power consumption by making use of AI.

Announcing the new Kirin 990 and Kirin 990(5G), Huawei praised their new chips will “bring impressively elevated performance, energy efficiency, AI capabilities, and photography.” Huawei’s Kirin 990 will power Huawei’s upcoming Mate 30 flagship, Mate 30 Pro.
