Oppo unveils its new 10x Lossless Zoom Smartphone Camera Tech at MWC 2019

Lots of interesting smartphone tech came out of MWC 2019 with the major highlights being, of course, foldable smartphones. The phones received a fair share of criticism from smartphone users but again, it points at how smartphones are changing this year.  So we got foldable smartphones, 5G smartphones then OPPO also made some interesting announcement.

The Chinese smartphone maker announced that it is working on a “10x lossless zoom” technology that would give you a 15.9-159mm equivalent zoom capability on a handset to be released in Kenya sometime this year. The company also confirmed plans to release its first 5G camera-centric smartphone brand for enhanced photography.

“We’re proud to deliver our first Innovation Event for media and partners today” OPPO Vice President, Anyi Jiang, told the press “Innovation is our top priority and we have made many recent developments to bring the future into consumer’s hands. We look forward to continuing with this commitment and bringing to market more advances particularly in 5G and photography.”

So how does the 10x lossless zoom technology works? Well, OPPO shared details on this saying the tech relies on a triple camera setup featuring a telephoto lens, ultra-wide-angle lens, and main camera.  It features a 48-megapixel high-resolution primary sensor, a 16mm focal length 120-degree ultra wide-angle lens, and a 160mm focal length telephoto lens.

OPPO said the 10x lossless zoom is a new technology created with industry-leading camera specifications. To provide further value to users, OPPO also introduced Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) on both the main camera and the telephoto lens to achieve higher, anti-shake accuracy.

The company said the new 10x lossless zoom tech is already mass-production ready, and that the camera tech will find its way to its “next smartphone”, set to release in Q2 2019.
