4 Essential Things to do Before Updating your Android Phone

So, Google’s next major Android update is here, and from what we know, the new Android version (Android 10) has put security on the forefront. For Pixel owners, Android 10 is already available for download. Also, Android 10 is available for download on several non-Pixel devices.

If you have already received the update and you still think whether you should upgrade or not, we beg you to wait for about a week or so. This will ensure you keep tabs in case of any mishaps happens to models similar to your device.

However, here is the list of what you need to do before upgrading to the latest Android update;

1. Back up your personal files and app data

This is definitely one of the most important steps to do. In some instances, Android does not format a device when updating Android, but what if your case is an exception? Now, to be safe from any misfortunes, it is a good habit to back up your files first. To back up, your data Navigate to Settings> System then tap on the Back up now button.

This will store a copy of your app data, call history, contacts, device settings, SMS messages, and also your photos & videos to your Google Account.

But still, for Photos and Videos, we highly recommend using Google Photos to perform the task. It does not harm to use any other cloud service provider as well.

2. Back up your Authenticator Codes

For those who use 2FA apps for an added layer of security to your email account(s), this is the time you want to ensure you have the Backup codes. Especially if you have one device. Those codes are so important, and you will need them to get back to your Google account.

Without the codes, you will have to undergo a rigorous process of remembering when you opened your Google account, and sadly, Google does not like to talk to people on these matters. To be safe, ensure you have the codes with you first before firing that update button.

3. Factory Reset

Although this is not that mandatory, sometimes resetting your phone will save you from much of the issues which result from a new update. Starting from scratch can also help you avoid some bugs that will likely affect some portion of users after the update.

4. Ensure your phone has a good amount of battery percentage

Many people already know this, but we had to include it as a bonus tip. Ensure you have at least 75% of battery before updating your device. This is because the process of updating software can take a while before being completed and the phone will be powered on and off severally before finishing up. If your device battery goes off along the update, the data could be corrupted – opening a new wave of constant problems.
