Google’s latest Chrome version now alerts you when your password is stolen in a data breach. The new feature is available in Chrome version 79, which ships with both live phishing alerts and improved password protection.
Using this feature, Chrome will alert you immediately when you visit a website or an app and type your credentials if they have been compromised in a data breach.
You will also be advised to change the same if you have a habit of using similar credentials across multiple platforms.
This only works if you have synced your credentials with Chrome, however. Google relies on a technique dubbed private set intersectional binding that looks up for your username and password in a breached database.
Aside from that, Chrome now offers real-time phishing protection alerting you when you are on a malicious site with phishing intent. Google says that they update their list of unsafe sites on the web every 30 minutes, thus protecting a total of 4 billion devices daily from different kinds of online threats.
Despite all of these efforts, some sites reportedly switch domains after every 30 minutes. Even with these smart malicious sites, Google says the real-time protection feature will help keep its users safe. The company estimates that the new feature will help them catch malicious sites 30 percent more accurately.
