Paystack brings onsite checkout and Terminal integration to Shopify in South Africa

Paystack has launched an onsite card checkout for Shopify in South Africa, giving online shoppers the ability to complete card payments without leaving a merchant’s Shopify checkout to visit a separate payment page.

The payments company says the new feature is designed to reduce friction at the point of purchase, particularly as South African retailers prepare for Black Friday and the busy festive shopping period.

With onsite checkout, customers can enter their card details and complete their purchases directly within a merchant’s existing Shopify checkout. Paystack says removing the additional redirect can create a more seamless transition between selecting a product and paying for it.

“Businesses put a lot of work into getting a customer to checkout. Paying should feel like a natural part of that experience. We’re giving South African Shopify merchants a way to accept card payments within the checkout their customers already know, with fewer interruptions at the point of purchase.” Said Thomas McKinnon, Country Lead, Paystack

The company’s launch comes as merchants prepare for periods of increased online traffic, when even small points of friction during checkout can affect whether shoppers complete a purchase.

Shopify agencies working with South African businesses are already reporting positive results from the feature. Mario Tuscano, Managing Director at AskMario, said some clients had recorded “an increase in conversion of up to 15% just from this feature alone.”

Paystack has also introduced an integration between Shopify and Paystack Terminal, allowing merchants to connect payments made through the company’s physical payment device with their Shopify accounts.

The integration is aimed at retailers operating across both online and physical stores. Instead of managing the two sales channels separately, merchants can connect their in-store card transactions to the Shopify platform they already use to manage their businesses.

“Our merchants are serving customers online and across the counter, often at the same time. Connecting Paystack Terminal to Shopify brings those parts of the business closer together. It’s especially useful during busy trading periods, when teams need to spend more time serving customers.” Mechiel Couvaras, Senior Account Manager, Paystack South Africa

The two Shopify updates come ahead of Black Friday, giving South African merchants tools aimed at improving online checkout and bringing their digital and physical sales operations closer together.

South African Shopify merchants can install Paystack’s onsite checkout app to begin accepting card payments directly within their Shopify checkout.
