Smartphone maker Tecno has won two awards at this month’s IFA 2026 consumer electronics trade show in Berlin for a 4.9mm modular phone and a compact gaming computer, as the brand seeks to shed its image as a budget handset maker.
The Tecno Modular Phone won gold in the ultra-slim magnetic modular technology category at the IFA Global Product Technology Innovation Awards, while the Tonino Lamborghini Tecno Taurus (Mega Mini G1 Pro) won gold in the miniaturised gaming PC category.
Technology media firm IDG, IFA, and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) established the awards in 2014 to recognise products that set new benchmarks in consumer electronics.
The recognition is significant for a brand whose Kenyan sales have largely been built on affordable Camon, Spark and Pova smartphones.
At 4.9mm thick, the modular phone is the world’s slimmest modular smartphone, according to Tecno.
The device uses magnets and pogo pin connectors to attach up to 10 add-on modules, which draw power from the phone’s built-in battery of between 3,000mAh and 4,000mAh.
Tecno pitches the phone as a physical gateway for personal AI assistants, saying the modular design helps resolve the conflict between rising AI computing demands and limited space inside handsets.
The company said the phone will enter mass production soon, but did not give a launch date, price or the markets where it will be sold.
The device had earlier won praise from technology publications at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in March, with The Verge naming it the best mobile technology at the show.
The Taurus, developed with Italian luxury brand Tonino Lamborghini, is a water-cooled gaming mini PC measuring about 6.36 litres.
It runs on an Intel Core i9-13900HK processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 graphics card, and has 15 ports including OCuLink and USB4.
Tecno also showcased a concept phone with a zero-millimetre screen bezel and a convertible laptop, the Megabook T15 360 Pro, at the Berlin fair.
Both are concept devices and are not yet headed for retail shelves.
Tecno has in the past introduced design features from its flagship and concept devices into its mass-market Camon and Spark ranges within one to two years.
The brand, which operates in more than 70 markets across five continents, is owned by Shenzhen-based Transsion Holdings, which also owns the Infinix and Itel brands.
