Doage is betting that commercial execution will become a bigger priority for Africa’s InsurTech sector as insurance startups move beyond product development and fundraising to focus on sustainable growth.
The company’s approach centres on helping insurance businesses convert innovative products into commercially viable ventures, with emphasis on revenue generation, market expansion and long-term enterprise value.
The strategy comes as African InsurTech companies face growing expectations to demonstrate that technology-driven solutions can translate into sustainable insurance businesses. While funding and innovation have helped drive the sector’s development, the ability to acquire customers, generate revenue and expand across markets is becoming increasingly important.
“The next phase of African InsurTech cannot only be about how many startups we accelerate or how much money we raise,” said Dominic Kavugwi, Founder of Doage. “We also have to ask how many sustainable insurance businesses we build, how much revenue they generate, how many markets they enter and ultimately how much enterprise value they create.”
Doage is seeking to strengthen the link between innovation, investment and commercial performance by supporting businesses through the transition from early-stage products to scalable insurance enterprises.
The focus reflects a shift in how InsurTech growth is increasingly being viewed across Africa. Rather than measuring progress primarily by the number of startups launched or capital raised, the emphasis is shifting toward business fundamentals such as revenue, customer growth, geographic expansion, and profitability.
Kavugwi has held leadership positions in established insurance businesses and global InsurTech, as well as roles involving board and executive governance. His experience has informed Doage’s focus on the commercial side of insurance innovation.
He was also recognized among Business Daily Africa’s Top 40 Under 40 Men in 2021.
For Doage, the longer-term objective is to help African insurance ventures build stronger commercial foundations and scale into sustainable businesses that can compete across multiple markets.
