MWC26 Kigali Postponed as GSMA Scrambles to Reset Africa's Biggest Mobile Gathering
The GSMA has postponed MWC26 Kigali less than two weeks before the event was due to open, leaving exhibitors, delegates and partners waiting for answers.
The GSMA has postponed MWC26 Kigali, its annual African technology and connectivity conference, less than two weeks before the event was due to begin in Rwanda.
The gathering had been scheduled to open on 16 June in Kigali and was expected to draw mobile network operators, policymakers, technology firms, investors and digital infrastructure stakeholders from across the continent. The industry association has not provided a reason for the decision and has yet to announce a replacement date.
In a brief statement, the GSMA said a future schedule would be communicated later and apologised for the disruption the move may cause to participants and partners.
The delay affects one of the telecom sector’s highest-profile events focused on African markets. Over recent years, MWC Kigali has developed into a meeting point for discussions around mobile connectivity, digital finance, infrastructure investment, artificial intelligence and public policy. The conference also serves as a platform for engagement between governments and some of the continent’s largest telecommunications operators.
The absence of an explanation has left exhibitors, sponsors and attendees awaiting further details. By this stage of the event cycle, many participants would typically have completed travel arrangements, exhibition planning and commercial preparations.
This year’s programme had been marketed around the theme of the “IQ Era”, with organisers planning sessions examining the intersection of human expertise and intelligent technologies. The agenda also included discussions on how digital tools are being deployed in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing and education.
A larger fintech component had been introduced for the 2026 edition, reflecting growing interest in digital payments and financial technology across African markets. The conference was also expected to host conversations on investment opportunities tied to expanding connectivity and digital infrastructure projects.
The postponement comes as governments, operators and technology companies continue to push broadband expansion, data centre development and digital service adoption across the continent. Industry events have increasingly become venues where regulatory priorities, investment plans and technology strategies are presented to regional and international audiences.
MWC Kigali has traditionally been organised by the GSMA with support from Rwanda’s Ministry of ICT and Innovation. The previous edition took place in Kigali from 23 to 25 October 2025.
Attention will now turn to the timing of the replacement event and whether organisers provide additional information on the factors behind the late scheduling change. Until then, exhibitors and delegates remain in a holding pattern as the GSMA works to determine when the conference will return to the calendar.
