Google, Tourism Ministry Partner to Drive AI-powered Tourism Strategy
The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, through its Magical Kenya “Origin of Wonder” platform, has announced a strategic AI-driven partnership with Google Kenya. The initiative, which follows a recommendation from the Kenya Tourism Rebranding and Repositioning Taskforce, aims to position Kenya as Africa’s leading AI-first tourism marketing destination.
Built around the Magical Kenya platform, the collaboration seeks to connect global travelers more directly with Kenya’s unique tourism offerings, boost visitor arrivals, create employment opportunities, and transition destination management towards a real-time, data-driven approach that supports personalized travel experiences.
Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano, said the partnership represents a significant milestone for the sector.
“Adopting an AI-first approach allows us to move beyond traditional marketing and build a sophisticated digital infrastructure. This will position Kenya as Africa’s leading digitally enabled tourism destination, helping us to double international arrivals and increase revenue for national prosperity.”
The strategy will leverage advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to attract high-value travelers from key international markets.
As part of the initiative, a Tourism Pulse Data Hub will be jointly developed on Google Cloud to function as a real-time dashboard drawing insights from global Google Search trends and brand sentiment. The platform is expected to support evidence-based policymaking and enable quicker responses to changing market dynamics. An AI-powered trip planner, built using Google’s Gemini models, will also deliver personalized travel itineraries tailored to individual traveler preferences, moving beyond traditional package offerings.
Additionally, digital skills development will be a key focus of the partnership, with Google’s skilling programmes set to support youth and tourism SMEs through specialized digital training. Young local curators will also receive training to create unique tourism experiences using Kenya’s digital assets on Google Arts & Culture, opening up new technology-driven employment opportunities.
To drive Kenya’s global visibility, the partnership will utilize Google Analytics and Google Ads to strengthen precision marketing campaigns aimed at engaging travelers in priority markets as they begin planning future trips.
Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google Sub-Saharan Africa, welcomed the initiative noting “We are excited to see how the power of AI and our digital skilling initiatives can empower Kenyan youth and tourism SMEs. By supporting ecosystem innovators to train local curators and provide advanced market intelligence, we are helping to create a more resilient and inclusive tourism economy that showcases the very best of Kenya to the world.”
The partnership is expected to establish a modern, data-driven tourism ecosystem that strengthens Kenya’s position as a leading global tourism destination for the long term.
