OI Lead Initiative Opens Applications to Equip Youths in Rural Kenya with AI Skills

The Otermans Institute has launched the call for applications for the OI Lead Initiative, a new AI literacy programme aimed at empowering underserved communities in Kenya through accessible, certified education in artificial intelligence.

The initiative is exclusively open to registered NGOs, charities, and community-based organisations (CBOs) working in the education sector, including internationally based organisations operating locally.

The programme, which aligns with the vision of the Global AI Summit on Africa, is designed to help Africa shift from being a passive consumer of AI technologies to an active developer and innovator. By participating, organisations will contribute to equipping the next generation of Kenyan youth with the skills necessary to thrive in an AI-driven world.

Each organisation can enroll up to 5,000 learners. The curriculum spans 10 hours and includes nine interactive core lessons delivered by AI-powered teachers. The lessons cover foundational topics such as the basics of AI, ethical and responsible AI use, and real-world applications. Learners will also complete quizzes and assessments throughout the programme. Those who successfully complete the course will receive an official certificate of achievement from Otermans Institute London.

The initiative particularly encourages applications from CBOs operating in border counties or working in areas such as lifelong learning, vocational training, special needs education, and women’s empowerment. These organisations stand to expand their educational impact, gain media exposure, access AI teaching tools, and build global partnerships. For students, the programme offers not only certification but also improved career prospects, enhanced employability, and the opportunity to win prizes.

Speaking about the programme, the Otermans Institute said: “Our initiative aims to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that learners from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to become fluent in AI, preparing them for the future job market and empowering them to be proactive contributors to the technological landscape.”

Registration for the programme is open until July 11, 2025. Selected organisations will be notified by July 16, with the teaching phase scheduled to run from August 1 to August 31, 2025. Certificates will be issued by September 8, 2025.

Through the OI Lead Initiative, the Otermans Institute hopes to ensure that learners across Kenya are not only ready for the opportunities of the AI era but are also equipped to lead its future.
