TECNO Camon 19 VS OPPO A57 VS Samsung Galaxy A23 – Which One Should You Buy?

Tecno Camon 19 is among the devices in the Camon 19 series that TECNO unveiled in the Kenya market a few weeks ago. Other devices in this series include the Camon 19 Pro and a 5G variant.

Tecno is selling the Camon 19 at Ksh. 23,500. At this price point, how does it fare with the competition?

We picked up two devices – The Galaxy A23 and the OPPO A57 for a comparison video with the Camon 19. Watch it and tell us which of the three devices you’re going to pick.

Cameras

The Camon 19 is a camera phone as expected. TECNO has added 64MP Bright Night Camera for better low-light shooting. This lens is actually the World’s first RGB+W lens with the white pixel accepting any wavelength of light to increase the sensitivity and brightness of the sensor. The other two cameras are 2MP Macro and 2MP depth.

The OPPO A57 on the other hand is giving us a dual camera setup featuring a 13-megapixel primary camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor while The Galaxy A23 has a quad camera setup, with a 50-megapixel primary camera with Optical Image Stabilization, a 5-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and two 2-megapixel macro and depth sensors

The front 16MP front camera, 4-in-1 technology on the Camon 19 make photos more bright in low-light environments which does a good job with sharp images, especially in good lighting. OPPO A57 has an 8-megapixel selfie camera same as the Galaxy A23.

Design

The boxy design is one of the standout features on the Camon 19 – There’s what TECNO is calling a Star Diamond Twin-Camera design, very slim bezels, and a nice shining diamond back cover that looks pretty good.

OPPO A57 is also giving us that same boxy feeling with a nice mate finish while the Galaxy A23 comes in a very glossy finish that is fingerprint attractive

Important to also mention that TECNO Camon 19 series actually won two awards this year for its design. – The 2022 iF Design Awards and MUSE Design Award 2022 for the Camon 19 Pro

The Camon 19 comes in three colours – Eco black, Polar blue & Mondrian (coming soon). OPPO A57 is available in Glowing Black, Glowing Green, and colours while the Galaxy A23 comes in Black, Blue, Peach, White

Display

This display is one of our favourites in this segment. It’s a 6.78-inch Full HD+ resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate for the Camon 19.

The OPPO A57  comes with a 60 Hz refresh rate 6.56-inch display while the Galaxy A23 comes with a 6.60-inch touchscreen display with the same 60hz refresh rate we’re getting on the other two.

Well, the displays on both are bright enough, offering some good colours, for outdoor use.  I wish they both had given us a 90hz refresh rate though.

Software and Performance

When it comes to the software both of these devices ship with Android 12 out of the box with the TECNO featuring HIOS 8.6 skin on top

TECNO says an upgrade to Android 13 is scheduled for late 2022 to early 2023. This actually one of the few devices at this price point offering Android 12 out of the box.

TBH HIOS is offering a better basic performance experience now but we’re still getting lots of bloatware and ads.

The One UI 4.1 on the A23 is clean with less bloatware same with Color OS 12 on the OPPO A57.

Now that we’re talking about performance, the MediaTek Helio G85 is a good option for a phone at this price point. The performance here is stable so nothing really to complain about same with Samsung with the  Snapdragon 680.  OPPO is really struggling here with its Helio G35.

Memory and Battery Life

For the memory, TECNO is offering you 4GB RAM and 128GB storage with an option of extended RAM of 3GB.

Samsung is offering us 8GB of RAM with an extra 4G virtual RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Oppo, on the other hand, is also offering us the same 8GB of RAM, 4G of extended RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Bother phones also have a dedicated memory card slot

For the battery, there is a 5000mah battery for both phones and TECNO also added an 18-wats charging brick in the box while Samsung is giving us a 25-wats brick. OPPO Takes the crown here with 33 Wats. This battery should offer you a full day of use without worrying about running out of charge.

Conclusion and Warranty

These three and pretty interesting devices.  The Camon 19 is a good phone design-wise and the specs are just okay for a phone at this price point. The phone has a lot of similarities to the Camon 19 Pro which we already spoke about in a separate video.

Important to also mention that TECNO is offering 24 Months + 1 Extended Warranty which provides free repair service during this period for failures caused by product quality. There is also 13 Months of Basic Warranty Service, 90 Days Broken Screen Protection and VIP service.

The Galaxy A23 and OPPO A57 also fair well in some parts so the choice will really depend on you.

While TECNO is selling the Camon 19 for Ksh.23, 500, OPPO is selling the A57 for 22,300 while Samsung is selling the Galaxy A23 for Ksh.22,500. The difference in pricing is so small so you really have a tough choice to make

  1. I have used the Camon 19 and I enjoyed it. It is going to be a little tough to decide on which to buy at the end of the day
