Apple Shipped 45 million iPhones Globally in Q2, 2020

Apple shipped a total of 45.1 million iPhones in the April to June quarter, says Canalys. The iPhone maker had an impressive quarter compared to other smartphone makers who saw a decline in shipment.

On the other hand, the global smartphone market continued to decline, plummeting by 14 pc in Q2.

Appleā€™s case was unique, standing out as an outlier in the heavily affected smartphone market due to COVID-19. The company saw shipments increase by an impressive 25% YoY even as itā€™s serial competitor Samsung reported ā€œweakerā€ smartphone sales ā€“ Canalys estimates suggested Samsungā€™s phone sales plummeted by a whopping 30 pc.

iPhone 11 was the best-seller for the company in the quarter accounting for almost 40% of total sales. At number two was the ā€˜budgetā€™ iPhone SE accounting for around 28% of Appleā€™s global sales volume.

However, Tim Cook, Appleā€™s CEO says the pandemic is affecting the iPhone and wearables more than the Mac and the iPad citing shifts to work from home and remote learning trends. Still ā€œiPhone did better than what we expected,ā€ says Cook.

Canalys projects that the ā€œiPhone SE will remain crucial to prop up volume this year, amid delays to Appleā€™s next flagship release.ā€

Delayed iPhone 12 Series

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 12 series will be available a little later and not in September as usual.

ā€œLast year we started selling new iPhones in late September, this year we expect supply to be available a few weeks later,ā€ said Apple CFO Luca Maestri in an earnings call.

China, one of Appleā€™s key markets and the worldā€™s largest smartphone market, saw shipments increase in impressive amounts. Shipments grew by 35% to reach 7.7 million units. In the US, Apple recorded double-digit growth as well for the quarter, year-over-year.

Apple is still number three in the smartphone market behind Huawei ā€“ the new market leader ā€“ and Samsung.
