TECNO’s First Feature Phone Running KaiOS Announced


Now that KaiOS is becoming a household name for smart feature phones, TECNO, the leading smartphone vendor in Africa, is also venturing into this ecosystem with its feature phones.

The company has today announced its first KaiOS powered 3G feature phone, TECNO T901.

“With the arrival of T901 powered by KaiOS, users gain access to apps such as WhatsApp, YouTube, Google Maps, and others on an affordable TECNO smart feature phone for the first time. The phone also supports GPS, Wi-Fi, and 3G, with significant network speed growth and better anti-signal interference performance as well as faster signal reception in call mode than those in 2G,” says Stephen Ha, Managing Director of TECNO Mobile.

TECNO T901 will be available in three colors options; gold, blue, and black.

Other features of the feature phone include; 2.4-inch QVGA display with 240x320p resolution, 256MB/512MB RAM. TECNO T901 also supports 3G, 4G LTE networks, WIFI connectivity, and NFC support. There is a 1900mAh which promises up to 25 days of standby time or 19hours of non-stop calling.

The device comes pre-installed with a couple of apps, including WhatsApp, the Google Assistant, Facebook, YouTube, and Google Maps. For more apps, you can still download at your own from the KaiStore, KaiOS’s playstore alternative.

Availability

TECNO has not yet revealed when this phone will be available in Kenya nor what will be the price at launch but Forbes has hinted that the device is priced at $25 (approx. Ksh 2500 excl. VAT).
