Government wants police officers to undergo compulsory ICT training

The Kenyan government wants all police officers to undergo a compulsory six-month training on Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i the training is aimed at equipping the officers with basic knowledge and skills to handle the newly launched automated information management system which will be rolled-out across the country. The National Police Service Information Management System (IMS) was launched yesterday at Karisa Maitha grounds in Kilifi County. ICT CS Joe Mucheru also attended the launch.

The training will be implemented in partnership with the Ministry of ICT.

“Today we start the actual digital migration since we want transparency in the police service. Our idea is to ensure we deliver President Uhuru Kenyatta’s vision and plan for us by ensuring services are digitised,”  Matiang’i

The National Police service has already embarked on registering all police officers in the country, to set up a digital database. With the IMS System, the Kenyan police want to digitise its administrative procedures, the Occurrence Book and even the Crime Management System.

The new IMS system will also help police officers apply for leave, fill forms for promotion online and track officers’ movement using their cell phones. According to a report published by the Daily Nation, the Police Sacco will also be brought on board to help the officers apply for loans through their cell phones.

It will also have a digitized criminal record to prevent loss of files and documents. ICT CS Mucheru while speaking at the launch said the system will enable the government to make follow-ups and monitor activities in police stations with ease.

“As enablers, we are working with other government departments such as health, agriculture, lands, among others, to improve services,” he said adding “we have fibre optic with a better 4G speed.”
