Social media site Facebook has sent out an apology to its users after the site crashed and was unavailable for close to 40 minutes last night.  The site saw close to 1.5 users using the the platform unable to access it due to what the company says was a ”Configuration” issue.

Major outages were reported over parts of North America according to Facebook’s map on Downdetector.com, which monitors disruptions. While most users are now able to access the site, there are still some in Europe who are reporting problems with the service.

A spokesman for Facebook however appologized to the billions of users affected with the outage.  ‘We apologize to those who have been inconvenienced.’

Users who attempted to log on to their accounts last night were greeted with an error message that said: ‘Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.’

Most frustrated users from Europe took to Twitter to complain about the outage which interestingly did not affect Facebook’s messaging service.

This is the third time the site has gone down due to a ”configuration issue”. The site is currently back to normal.
