Nigerian singer-songwriter GoodGirl LA has been selected as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Ambassador for November. The announcement recognizes her influential work in blending Afro-fusion, R&B, and pop, and her role in reshaping the narrative for female artists on the continent.
The Spotify EQUAL Africa initiative is dedicated to highlighting women who are defining the sound of African music, providing them with a global platform and resources to connect with audiences worldwide.
Born in Lagos, GoodGirl LA’s musical journey began by drawing inspiration from global icons like Michael Jackson and Whitney Spears, as well as African legends such as Asa, 2baba, and Brenda Fassie. She gained nationwide attention in 2021 with her breakout collaboration with Vector, “Early Momo,” which accumulated millions of streams and solidified her as a rising star.
Her 2025 comeback EP, ‘Goodgirl’, has been noted for exploring the duality of modern womanhood, embracing themes of strength, vulnerability, rebellion, and grace.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, said, “GoodGirl LA represents everything EQUAL Africa stands for: authenticity, courage, and growth,” Okumu said. “She’s shaping a new narrative of what it means to be a woman making music in Nigeria; unapologetically herself, fiercely talented, and setting the tone for a new generation.”
For GoodGirl LA, the recognition aligns perfectly with her current artistic direction. “Being a part of EQUAL right now feels like perfect timing in light of the kind of music I’m putting out soon,” she stated, hinting at “more fearless expression and owning my vices, sensuality and steeze, regardless of the norms.”
Known for her candid perspective, GoodGirl LA described her sound as “sexy, ambitious and beautiful,” and her personal style as an “intersection between vintage grunge and Y2K.”
She is also outspoken about the challenges in her field. “It’s not just a male-dominated world of music, it’s a male-dominated world,” she commented. “But I’ll never be less of a human because my organs are different, not happening, girl.”
This fearless spirit is a cornerstone of her advice to aspiring creatives. “Things are bound to be imperfect, but you have to keep going regardless,” she said. “Life ain’t all roses, it’s a fight for a knife in the mud, but no matter how it ends, you fight for your dreams… Life is about creating. So you win, regardless.”
