IEBC Launches Continuous Voter Registration Kenya Ahead of Elections: How Citizens Can Register and Verify Their Status

First-time voters and seasoned citizens alike face a renewed opportunity to engage with the democratic process

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is reopening Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Kenya on Monday, September 29, 2025. This initiative targets eligible Kenyan citizens, particularly youth turning 18, and underscores the importance of civic participation ahead of national elections.

For many first-time voters, registering to vote is a defining moment. The IEBC voter registration process ensures citizens can officially join the electoral roll and exercise their democratic rights.

Who Can Register?

To participate in voter registration in Kenya, you must:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen.
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Hold a valid Kenyan ID or passport.
  • Not have been convicted of an election offense in the past five years.
  • Not be declared of unsound mind.
  • Not already be a registered voter.

Meeting these requirements ensures your eligibility to participate in the democratic process.

Where and How to Register

Eligible Kenyans can register at any IEBC Constituency Office
. Registration is temporarily unavailable in areas with ongoing by-elections.

The process is simple:

  • Visit a designated registration center with your ID or passport.
  • Complete the statutory registration form.
  • Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo).
  • Receive an acknowledgment slip—for your records, not for voting identification.

The IEBC voter registration system also offers services such as:

  • Transfer of Registration: Move your registration to another polling station using Form C.
  • Change of Particulars: Update personal information at your Constituency Office.
  • Inspection of Registration Status: Check your details online or in person.

Behind the Scenes

The resumption of CVR comes after weeks of preparation. IEBC teams have:

  • Mapped and reviewed registration centers.
  • Trained registration personnel.
  • Packaged and distributed registration materials.
  • Launched voter education programs to guide citizens through the process.

These steps aim to ensure smooth operations and reinforce trust in the voter registration system.

This phase of CVR does not include Kenyans living abroad or residents of correctional facilities. Policies for these groups are under review, and updates will be communicated by the IEBC in due course.

Zoom Out

Voter registration in Kenya is more than a bureaucratic process—it is the foundation of democracy. By registering, citizens gain a voice in shaping policy, leadership, and national direction. The resumption of CVR is especially significant for youth, who represent the largest untapped segment of eligible voters.

As the launch date approaches, the spotlight will be on youth engagement and the IEBC’s ability to manage a seamless registration process. For those who qualify, registering to vote is not just a civic duty; it is an opportunity to influence Kenya’s future.
