Zoom’s Daily Usage Continues To Grow Despite Escalated Scrutiny On Privacy
Zoom ’s daily usage numbers are still on the rise, despite the company’s open laxity on privacy issues. The company’s daily usage numbers were just 10 million in December, and jumped to 200million in March, thanks to work and study from home orders.
In a recent blog post, Zoom says they have seen daily usage numbers grow from 200million in March to now 300million in the last three weeks.
This comes weeks after the company was banned by several organizations and even governments wary of security-related issues. Just recently, the Indian government also warned government officials from using Zoom for official purposes. “Zoom is a not a safe platform,” the advisory read.
Owning to their mistakes Zoom has vouched to tighten the security and privacy of its users earlier this month. The company stopped all feature updates to work on security-related issues on their video conferencing platform.
So far Zoom has rolled out several security updates. The next Zoom update – Zoom 5.0 – will be seeded out next week with two new security-related features. The first upcoming feature is AES 256-bit GCM encryption. Another new feature is the ability of admins to report users to Zoom’s Trust & Safety team.
More features are obviously in the pipeline, as the company diverted all of its resources for 90 days to iron out existing security flaws.
Update: “Participants” not “Users”
Zoom quietly deleted the original blog post that claimed they had “more than 300 million daily users.” In another post, the company claims it have “300 million daily Zoom meeting participants.” This is significant error since participants means that if one attends over 5 meetings a day, they’ll be counted five times.
“We are humbled and proud to help over 300 million daily meeting participants stay connected during this pandemic. In a blog post on April 22, we unintentionally referred to these participants as “users” and “people.”
