Airtel Kenya Is The Only Telco That Grew Its Mobile Subscriptions Market Share In Q2 2019/2020


The latest insight report into the mobile subscription industry reveals rather shocking details. The Communications Authority of Kenya in its latest Sector Statistics Report, which usually detail the latest performance and trends of the ICT sector, reveals that Airtel Kenya is the only telco that gained market share in Q2 2019/2020.

The telco gained a 1.3 percent market share in the period ending December 2019, now controlling a 25.9 percent share.

During the period, Safaricom PLC’s market share in mobile subscriptions dropped by 0.1 percent, to 64.8 percent. Telkom Kenya and Equitel also recorded a decline in subscription numbers as well, both losing 0.5 percent to 6.2 and 3.1 percent, respectively.

Safaricom still leads in the number of subscriptions with over 34 million subscribers(up 2.2 percent from Q1) followed by Airtel Kenya with 14 million – a 7.6 percent pump from the previous quarter. Telkom Kenya ranks third with 3.3 million subscribers, down 4.70 percent to the previous quarter.

Equitel’s subscriber count plunged by 10.1 percent from the previous quarter to 1.7 million.

The number of post-paid customers in the country stood at 1.7 million, with 91 percent of all subscribers on Safaricom.

Notably, Safaricom has recently sweetened its post-paid packages and additionally making it easier to join, so it’ll be interesting to see how customers responded to this at the end of Q3. Airtel Kenya and Telkom also have their own quite competitive post-paid plans.
