Xiaomi is trying to be the Apple of China. There are several products that the company has been criticized for drawing inspiration from Apple’s products. We are getting used to that already.
Xiaomi has recently released its smartwatch, first of the company, called the Mi Watch. And the smartwatch looks remarkably similar to the Apple Watch. From the square-ish designed body, a crown, and a button on the side.
The design looks clean and, this smart watch is, for no doubt, a real beauty. The Mi Watch has a 1.78-inch AMOLED display (326 ppi) that supports Always-on functionality. Under the hood is Xiaomi’s MIUI skin but for the watch, and is based on Google’s Wear OS.
Coming to the hardware, the Mi Watch runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 4G chipset. The chipset comprises a quad-core CPU, with Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz. The four cores are placed in tow with 1GB memory and 8GB storage.
A 590mAh battery is there to get the smart watch running, and should last for 36 hours on a single charge on cellular mode, according to Xiaomi. Mi Watch supports Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, plus cellular connectivity via an eSIM.
There are also other standard features that you will find on reasonable smart watches (not the cheap gimmicky type), like a heart rate monitor and tracking activities like sleep, cycling, running, and swimming. Oh, and wireless charging.
On matters availability, Xiaomi only launched the Mi Watch in China, it’s home market. The global release is not known unless the company says something on that front.
Mi Watch was launched at a price of about $185 (approx. Ksh 19,000). Xiaomi plans to launch a high-end variant before the year closes, which will cost about $100 more set apart by the sapphire glass and stainless-steel body.
