Apple boosts its chip team by hiring an ex-ARM, AMD, and Intel architect

Apple has recently hired an industry professional in everything chips. Mike Filippo is an experienced CPU designer that has worked both for the most significant CPU making companies including AMD, Intel, and ARM.

His move to Apple ends a ten-year tenure at ARM in which he lead various chip products as the lead architect. It’s a big win for Apple since ARM has been its primary supplier in chips that powers its mobile devices.

In 2018 Bloomberg reported Apple had a plan of making their own Apple based chips for Macs and could be ready for the market as early as 2020.

Although Apple has not yet confirmed his role in the company, Mike’s LinkedIn indicates that he is an Architect at Apple, which may be closely linked to CPUs which Mike has spent most of his life working on at both Intel and AMD.

However, since it is not official as per now, we can only speculate on this matter. Alternatively, Mike’s experience may also be channelled to fill the gap left by Gerard Williams III, a key architect that was working on Apple’s A-Series mobile CPUs.

In response to Bloomberg, an ARM representative stated “Mike was a long-time valuable member of the ARM community. We appreciate all of his efforts and wish him well in his next endeavour.”
