Technology firm WSO2 has announced the general availability of Agent Manager, an open control plane built to govern artificial intelligence agents across any framework, model or deployment, as enterprises struggle to keep pace with the rapid growth of automated AI agents in their operations.
The platform, fully open source and deployable anywhere, gives enterprises control over what their AI agents can access, including large language models, MCP servers and agent-level guardrails, as well as how the agents run, covering sandboxed runtime, observability and evaluation.
Agent Manager launched in beta in June 2026. General availability adds per-agent, per-environment identity controls, MCP-level governance and a sandboxed runtime, bringing the full agent lifecycle into a single system and separating governance infrastructure from agent logic, allowing teams to switch models or frameworks without rebuilding compliance controls.
WSO2 Chief AI Officer Dr Rania Khalaf said the company had set out to avoid treating speed and control as competing priorities. “Teams want the freedom to use the best model or framework for the job at hand and control has to respect that heterogeneity. When governance is separated from agent logic, it can scale across frameworks instead of being locked into one ecosystem,” she said.
The company said most organisations have stitched together separate tools for agent traffic, identity and monitoring, leaving gaps that make it difficult to fully see or govern deployed agents. It cited Gartner projections that the average global Fortune 500 enterprise will have more than 150,000 agents in use by 2028, even as only 13 per cent of organisations believe they have adequate governance in place.
Agent identity has been particularly slow to mature, WSO2 said, with agents often fitted into identity frameworks designed for people and no policy layer in place once an agent calls a tool or an MCP server.
Agent Manager’s capabilities include federated management of agents across cloud, on-premise and hybrid deployments, verifiable agent identity with role-based access and instant revocation, more than 40 built-in guardrails enforced at the agent, MCP and LLM levels, versioned lifecycle management with one-click agent suspension, and a Kubernetes-native sandboxed runtime. The platform is built on open standards including OpenTelemetry, MCP and OAuth2, and supports frameworks such as LangChain, CrewAI, Amazon Bedrock Strands and Microsoft Agent Framework.
WSO2 was named among notable vendors in Forrester’s Agent Control Plane Landscape, Q2 2026 report, and won Best Innovation in Open Source AI at the AI Dev Summit’s 2026 AI Tech Awards. The company also co-authored a whitepaper on identity management for agentic AI with the OpenID Foundation and has joined the Agentic AI Foundation.
WSO2 Agent Manager is now generally available under the Apache 2.0 licence, deployable self-hosted or as managed SaaS.
