Effective October 1, 2024, visitors planning to visit Zanzibar through the seaport or airport will be required to possess a valid Inbound Travel Insurance which will provide coverage for a duration of up to 92 days stay.
All foreigners entering Zanzibar excluding residents will be required to part with $44 (Sh 5,676) for the insurance policy that is inclusive of all charges per visitor.
Failure to comply with the requirement could result in denial of entry at immigration checkpoints.
In a travel advisory seen by TechTrends Media, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar said this requirement is being implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of all foreigners and mitigate any possible risk pertaining to their travel to the island.
The advisory that was signed by Minister of State, President’s Office-Finance and Planning Saada Mkuya Salum noted that the policy provides comprehensive coverage for various emergencies including repatriation, evacuation and other related contingencies.
“It is essential that all prospective foreigners make necessary arrangements to obtain suitable inbound travel insurance only from Zanzibar Insurance Corporation through QR code that will be provided before embarking on their journey to Zanzibar,” the document read in part.
The Inbound Travel Insurance will provide visitors with medical cover for the eligible emergency medical expenses that may not be covered in one’s medical plan.
The plan will also cover other benefits on top of medical expenses such as loss of baggage, repatriation of body, legal liability etc.
Visitors are advised to purchase the travel insurance immediately after paying their first trip deposit.
Additionally, the travel insurance policy is non-renewable and visitors are encouraged to purchase a new policy after the 92 days have lapsed.
The insurance will also offer a special designed package for a family but visitors can only purchase one policy per visitor.
Once paid, visitors will be sent their policy documents via their registered email addresses and will include policy information such as one’s unique policy number, policy effective date, benefits, terms and conditions, limitations, exclusions and other important information.
“We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this essential measure aimed at safeguarding your interests while visiting our picturesque destination,” the advisory read in part.
“Your understanding and compliance are crucial as we collectively strive towards creating a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone visiting Zanzibar.”
