Africa is OPPO’s Third Largest Market


Africa has proved to be a very lucrative market for a number of smartphone companies. While Transsion continues to dominate the market, other players are also sharing a piece of this cake. 

One of these firms is OPPO, which has been rapidly expanding in the region. The company entered Kenya back in 2015 launching a number of A series devices. 

OPPO currently operates in about 5 markets – China, Indonesia, Africa, APAC and Europe with Africa being its third-largest market. During the #OPPOExpertTour, in China with a number of journalists from these regions, the company revealed that it has recorded a steady sales growth ranking number 3 and number 4 in shipping last year in China and Globally respectively. 

OPPO also revealed that it operates in more than 60 countries working with more than 80 operators. To date, the company also has more than 260,000 retail outlets and more than 48,000 global employees.

The company has been operating in Africa in Kenya, Nigeria, Morocco and Egypt with its latest market being South Africa.

In an interview with Retailing Africa  Liam Faurie back in 2021, head of go-to-market and operations at OPPO said the company’s success comes from open markets where consumer demand drives growth and we enter with price points.

 ‘’..whereas South Africa is more challenging as SA operators have very strict requirements, products have to be customised first for SA with all their own animation pre-loaded. Vodacom, MTN and Telkom shops have very strict guidelines on how they allow brands to be expressed in-store. He said.

Research firm Canalysis in its recently released data revealed that OPPO had a 4% market share in Africa in Q1 20223.  With IDC analysts projecting a modest rebound with an annual growth of 3 percent in smartphone shipments into the continent on improved demand constraints, OPPO is hopping to increase this share.
