China Enacts Strict Laws That Internet Influencers Must Follow

The Chinese government has said that going forward, influencers must have the qualification to talk about certain topics such as law and medicine. This is just one of the many laws that Beijing has recently enacted to reign on influencers and the technology industry at large.

The new regulation is targeted at the highly-popular live-streaming market in the country. A joint statement from China’s State Administration of Radio and Television and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism stated that content creators in fields that require a” high professional level” must hold a corresponding qualification for them to talk about those subjects.

Furthermore, content creators must produce those qualifications to the live-streaming platform they use, and they must also be reviewed by the platform.

China is a hotbed of technological advancements and the live-streaming sector has attracted some of the biggest brands such as Tencent, Alibaba and TikTok. These platforms have become a source of livelihood for many influencers who rake in billions of dollars in sales of certain products.

In spite of China’s fast adoption of technology, the government keeps the sector in check with strict laws. Over the past one year, China has enacted several regulations touching on the technology sector, in a bid to reign over its giant tech companies.

Among rules that live-streamers must observe, is to avoid publishing content that weakens or distorts the leadership of the ruling Chinese Communist Party. Influencers must also refrain from using deep fake technology to tamper with party or state leaders.

Content creators are also now allowed to display excessive food waste, exorbitant luxurious lifestyles or sexually suggestive or provocative content.
