Huawei Mate X2 Foldable Smartphone Launched

It's unclear if it'll be available locally

Huawei Mate X2 is the latest foldable phone from the Chinese manufacturer with an external and internal display. Unlike the first-generation Mate X, Huawei Mate X2 has a new folding mechanism called Falcon Wing Design. It folds inward instead of outwards, as seen in the Mate X and Mate Xs.

The flexible internal display measures 8-inches while the outward is 6.45-inches. Both are OLED panels with a 90Hz refresh rate. The exterior display has 2700 x 1160 pixels resolution, and the interior has 2480 x 2200 pixels.

Huawei has included several software features to utilize smartphones’ folding mechanisms, including Smart Multi-Window, Floating Window, App Multiplier, App Bubble, etc., for multitasking. App Multiplier allows users to open multiple instances in one app, which is handy in various situations.

Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9000 powers the Mate X2 in tow with a 24-core Mali-G78 GPU. The phone has 8GB of memory paired with 256GB or 512GB internal storage.

It has four cameras on the rear, led by a 50 MP Ultra Vision Camera (Wide Angle, f/1.9 aperture, OIS). The other three include a 16 MP Cine Camera (Ultra-Wide Angle, f/2.2 aperture), a 12 MP Telephoto Camera (3x Optical Zoom, f/2.4 aperture, OIS) and an 8 MP SuperZoom Camera (10x Optical Zoom, f/4.4 aperture, OIS), with autofocus.

Capture modes are available in plenty like Story Creator, Tracking Shot, Steady Shot, Audio Zoom, High-res, and Time-Lapse. You also get Dual-View Video, Night, Macro, Portrait, Pro, Slow-Mo, Panorama, Monochrome, Light painting, HDR, Filter, Stickers, Documents, Master AI, etc.

On the front is a 16MP single selfie camera that can also shoot in a variety of modes. Huawei Mate X2 is powered by a 4500mAh battery that you can top at 55W via USB Type C cable.

There are two SIM slots available, and there are also other features like Bluetooth, 5.2, Wi-Fi, and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Huawei Mate X2 Foldable smartphone runs on Android 10-based EMUI 11.0. It was unveiled in four colours, Crystal Blue, Crystal Pink, White, and Black.

The device starts at around Ksh 300,000 in the company’s home market China.
