The Ministry of Technology in India has banned 59 Chinese apps citing security concerns. These include TikTok, WeChat, Shareit, Mi Video, UC Browser, Xender, ES File Explorer, and even game apps like Clash of Kings and Mobile Legends, among others.
In a statement, the ministry said, “…in view of the emergent nature of threats [The Ministry of Information Technology] has decided to block 59 apps since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”
The 59 banished apps were accused of “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.”
Hours after the ban, few apps are reportedly not available for download both on iOS and Android in India including TikTok. In response, TikTok told Bloomberg is committed to working with the government to resolve the issues.
TikTok being on the fore line to work things out is not a surprise as its app has raked around 200million users in the country alone.
Despite elated security concerns by India’s government on Chinese apps, the two have been involved in a clash at the borders recently. 20 Indian police soldiers died in a border clash with their Chinese counterparts.
