Vivo Y Series Smartphones now in Kenya targeting the youth


Vivo Kenya officially set shop in the country this year.  The Chinese smartphone maker is a subsidiary to the third-largest smartphone company, BBK Electronics. The company gained its popularity in the world through its Vivo Nex device that pioneered the pop-up camera that everyone’s copying now.

Vivo is now here and has officially launched its Vivo Y Series devices in the Kenyan market. The devices include the Vivo Y12, Vivo Y15 and  Vivo Y17 targeting the youth. 

“The Y Series is made for the youth. We are bringing our latest photography innovations to many younger consumers through our three fashionable Y Series smartphones,” said Mr. Hosea Liu, Vivo Kenya General Manger. 

“With ‘Powered by Youth’ as our guiding light, the Y Series is a clear example of our commitment to bringing advanced and premium features to our energetic and dynamic consumers all around the world and from all walks of life,”  he added. 

Both devices come with the same 500-mAH battery size with the Y17 supporting Dual-Engine Fast Charging. They both also come with 6.35” HD+ Halo FullView™ Display and Funtouch 9 skin on top of Android 9 pie.

Let’s look at each of the device

Vivo Y12

The device just as I had mentioned earlier comes with a 6.35-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 720×1544 pixels at a pixel density of 268 pixels per inch (ppi) and an aspect ratio of 19.3:9. It is powered by a 2GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 processor and comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. 

The Vivo Y12 runs Android 9 Pie and is powered by a massive 5,000mAh battery. For the cameras we’re getting an 8-megapixel primary camera with an f/2.2 aperture; a second 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a third 2-megapixel camera with an f/2.4 aperture. The selfie camera is 8-megapixel with an f/2.0 aperture. The Vivo Y12 is a dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone.

Vivo does not say how much the device will cost but we will definitely be on the lookout for this. 

Vivo Y15

Vivo says the Y15 will retail at Ksh.21,999 will be available in two colours Aqua Blue and Burgundy Red. 

The phone comes with a 6.35-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 720×1544 pixels. We are getting 4GB of RAM and 64GB of inbuilt storage. 

The Vivo Y15 (2019) runs Android 9 Pie and is powered by a 5,000mAh battery. For the cameras, the Vivo Y15 (2019) on the rear packs a 13-megapixel primary camera with an f/2.2 aperture; a second 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a third 2-megapixel camera with an f/2.4 aperture. the selfie camera is  16-megapixel with an f/2.0 aperture.

Again as we stated earlier, the Vivo Y15 (2019) runs FunTouch OS 9 based on Android 9 Pie. It is a dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone.

Vivo Y17

The Vivo Y17 will be retailing at Ksh. 24,999 and will also be available in two colours Aqua Blue and Burgundy Red and an Octa core, 2.3 GHz, Cortex A53 processor.

As far as the specs are concerned, the Vivo Y17 comes with a 6.35-inch touchscreen display and comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It also runs on Android Pie powered by a powerful 5,000mAh battery.

For the cameras, we are getting a 20 MP Front Camera and on the rear, there’s a 13MP + 8MP + 2MP camera with features like Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Face detection, Touch to focus.
