Safaricom Launches custom emoji for its #Twaweza campaign

Safaricom has become the first Twitter account in Kenya to launch custom emoji for its #Twaweza campaign. This, the company says will help it express its personality and encourage more users to join the Twaweza conversation.

Safaricom also says the custom emoji reflects its commitment to innovation through which it believes it can transform the country.

‘’The Custom Emoji reflects the #Twaweza campaign values – positivity, collaboration, friendship, mobile revolution etc., and with The Twitter Custom Emoji being global and on multiple devices – people all over the world can enjoy the #Twaweza Custom Emoji.’’

Emojis are basically ideograms and smileys used in electronic messages and web pages to represent various genres, including facial expressions, common objects, places and types of weather, and animals.  Originating on Japanese mobile phones in the late 1990s, emoji have become increasingly popular worldwide since their international inclusion in Apple’s iPhone in 2011 and then extended to the Android mobile phones. In 2015, Oxford Dictionaries named an emoji the Word of the Year.

Safaricom also becomes the 2nd country in Africa to use the custom emoji after South Africa’s @DialDirect.

The company adopted the #Twaweza slogan back in June while announcing the repositioning of its brand from just a telecommunications to a digital lifestyle enabler. Twaweza: When we come together, Great things happen, took over from ‘’The Better Option’’.

The campaign Safaricom says shows that Kenyans can do anything they put their minds to.
