This Nigerian health-tech startup is giving maternal healthcare in Africa a new face

The subject of maternal healthcare has been at the centre of global conversations at every turn. Several approaches offering a wide range of solutions have been tried and tested and some have proven efficient.

A Nigerian tech startup called Babymigo is helping to increase access to maternal healthcare across the continent by leveraging technology. Babaymigo was founded in 2018 by Kemi Olawoye and Adeloye Olanrewaju and has several useful functionalities.

On the platform, users have access to more than 20 community groups that discuss various issues of interest in maternal health. Users can narrow down to a particular age group or location where they can be part of particular discussions. Mothers are also able to book various events and pregnancy classes.

“Our platform targets women at different stages of their pregnancy and parenting journey to empower, equip and provide them with tools and resources that improve maternal and child health outcomes,” company co-founder Kemi Olawoye said.

“We also offer a range of products for mums, including Mamacare, a maternity care plan; Bloomcare, a digital family and women’s health clinic; and Classes by Babymigo, for new parents to get ready for labour, birth, caring for a new-born and parenting,” he added.

The company said the response has been impressive so far, with more than 200,000 people already using the platform, while more than one million parents have been reached.

The startup earns revenue from advertising and consumer-centred services.

“We have raised our pre-seed and been recognised by the Google Black Founders Fund for Africa, the Google Launchpad Accelerator Africa programme, the US Department of State’s GIST Outstanding Women Entrepreneur award, and the AXA FemTech Accelerator Programme, among several others,” said Olawoye.
