When the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) sought to have all SIM Cards registered earlier this year, it was forced to postpone the deadline from April to October 15th, following a request by telecommunication companies.
The telcos decried low turnout and slow response to the exercise, despite introducing various channels of DIY processes to complement the walk-ins into their customer care centres.
As the government stood its ground and refused to extend the deadline, members of the public were left with fewer options and most of them complied within the set timeframe.
Safaricom says that it achieved 93% customer registration by the time the exercise closed on October 15th.
“Safaricom has complied with the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) initiative on Subscriber registration which enables them to know their customers better while managing risks prudently that might occur via customer-related fraud incidences.” A statement from the company stated.”
The next of phase of the exercise was cleaning up the data including vetting the submitted customer information over the next two months to ensure that they have 100% conformity as directed by CA.
Mobile operators were given 60 days to carry out clean-up and ensure absolute compliance. CA Director General, Ezra Chiloba confirmed the 93% compliance by Safaricom, adding that Airtel managed 81.2% a significant rise from the paltry 42% previously recorded.
“Each operator is under obligation to ensure 100 per cent compliance. For the avoidance of doubt, the 60 days is not an extension, but a period for the mobile operators to take certain actions including denial of service to prompt further compliance.”
