Safaricom Launches ‘Shangwe @25’ Promotion as it Mark its 25th Anniversary

Safaricom has unveiled a nationwide promotion, ‘Shangwe @25’, to mark its 25th anniversary of operations in Kenya. The campaign, announced on Monday, is designed to reward over five million customers with daily and weekly prizes while simultaneously funding community impact projects across the country.

As the centerpiece of the celebration, 25 customers will each win KES 1 million. In a unique twist that emphasizes community upliftment, each of the new millionaires will also receive an additional KES 250,000 to support a community project of their choice, ensuring the celebration has a broad ripple effect.

The promotion extends its rewards to the business sector as well. Twenty-five Small & Micro businesses are set to win a Bajaj Tricycle to boost their mobility, while 15 Large and Medium Enterprises will each receive KES 500,000 to channel toward their own community initiatives. Furthermore, five small businesses will win KES 250,000 worth of stock every week.

In addition to the grand prizes, millions of customers will win instant rewards, including airtime, data bundles, 5G routers, mobile devices, and M-PESA cash prizes ranging from KES 100 to KES 10,000. This year’s festive season will also feature a ‘Green Box’ experience, allowing customers to unwrap surprises ranging from devices to festive treats like chicken, goats, and sheep.

“For 25 years, Safaricom has been at the heart of Kenya’s transformation, connecting people to people, people to opportunities and people to knowledge,” said Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom Group CEO. “As we mark this milestone, we celebrate not just our journey but the millions of customers, partners and communities who have made it possible. ‘Shangwe @25’ is our way of saying thank you and ensuring that when one customer wins, their community wins too.”

Participation in the promotion is integrated into regular network use. Customers can enter by transacting on M-PESA, redeeming or using Bonga Points, or purchasing any Safaricom product like data bundles, voice bundles, or Home Fibre subscriptions. Merchants are entered by using business solutions like Buy Goods and Pochi La Biashara, while M-PESA agents earn entries through deposit or withdrawal transactions over KES 1,000.

Alongside the promotion, the company is also running a “Citizens of the Future” initiative, allowing individuals to nominate schools for community-funded upgrades.
