Safaricom Welcomes Back Stephen Chege as Group Chief External Affairs Officer

Kenya’s leading telco, Safaricom PLC on Friday announced the return of Stephen Chege, who rejoins the company as the Group Chief External Affairs Officer, a role that will see him support both Safaricom Kenya and Safaricom Ethiopia.

Chege, an experienced telecommunications expert, is returning to the Safaricom family after a successful tenure at Vodacom Group, where he served as Chief External Affairs Officer since 2021. His previous role at Vodacom Group saw him support eight markets across Africa, including South Africa, Tanzania, DRC, Mozambique, Lesotho, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt.

In his new and expanded role, Chege will be responsible for regulatory and external affairs, public policy, communication strategy and media relations, corporate social investments, ESG and sustainability, and integrating purpose across all Group operations, including Safaricom Ethiopia. This broad mandate positions him at the centre of the company’s engagement with governments, regulators, partners, and communities across the region.

During his time at Vodacom Group, Chege built a reputation for leading a high-performing and proactive external affairs function. He was instrumental in driving the resolution of critical operating licence renewals, tax matters, and spectrum acquisitions.

Furthermore, he championed positive policy reforms in both mobile money and mobile services while advancing Vodacom’s ESG implementation and reporting.

He also led the strategic reorganisation of the Vodacom Foundations, solidifying the group’s position as a purpose-led organisation.

Safaricom expressed enthusiasm for the appointment, signaling a move to leverage Chege’s vast experience as it navigates the complex regulatory and corporate landscape across East Africa, particularly with the continued growth of Safaricom Ethiopia.
