Google AI Mode Search Brings Multimodal, Smarter Search Experiences to Users in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa

Google AI Mode transforms how users in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa explore complex questions and uncover deeper insights across the web

Google has introduced AI Mode in Search for users in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, ushering in a new era of AI-powered search designed to be more intuitive, comprehensive, and helpful. The feature allows users to tackle complex, multi-part questions with advanced reasoning, multimodal inputs, and deeper ways to explore topics.

AI Mode transforms the search experience by enabling users to ask nuanced questions that previously required multiple searches.

Powered by a custom version of Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 model, AI Mode brings enhanced context understanding and advanced reasoning to everyday searches.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring AI Mode to our users in the region,” said Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Africa. “People here are curious and have complex questions, whether about planning a trip or understanding a new concept. AI Mode reimagines Search, making it easier to find information and explore a wider range of content from across the web.”

A standout feature of AI Mode is its query fan-out capability, which breaks down questions into subtopics and simultaneously searches multiple queries. This allows for deeper web exploration and uncovers highly relevant content. AI Mode also supports text, voice, and image queries, letting users interact naturally—simply tap the microphone icon or upload a photo to ask a question.

Importantly, AI Mode emphasizes content discovery from the open web. AI-powered responses include prominent links to web sources, and data from AI Overviews indicates that users engage with a more diverse range of websites and spend more time exploring them. In cases where AI confidence is low, traditional search results are still presented to ensure reliability.

AI Mode is rolling out starting today and will appear as a dedicated tab on the Search results page as well as within the Google app on Android and iOS.
