Safaricom unveils tech re-skilling program for persons with disabilities
Safaricom has unveiled a tech re-skilling program to train young Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in digital skills to improve their employability.
Safaricom says this new initiative is part of its efforts to promote inclusivity and embrace developments in the digital world.
Currently in the pilot phase, the programme will see students with disabilities embark on a 23-week software engineering module at Moringa School. It will also include comprehensive career mentorship and coaching designed to equip participants with the skills needed to excel in the IT sector.
“As we work towards becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030, we realise that we cannot leave anyone behind. Currently, persons with disabilities make up 3.3% of our workforce, and we are keen to grow this number to 3.5% through such re-skilling initiatives,” said Nyokabi Florence, Chief Human Resources Officer of Safaricom PLC.
The programme follows the successful IT Bridge Academy, which was hosted in 2022 in partnership with several organisations, including Sight Savers, the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK), Three Talents, Accenture, and CISCO.
The IT Bridge Academy offered young job seekers with disabilities who have a passion for IT a chance to train and gain hands-on experience in the sector.
The training program is part of Safaricom’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts to ensure that inclusivity is woven into every aspect of the organisation, cutting across attracting, retaining and developing employees to ensure the organisation engages with customers and the broader community.
